Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital Celebrates Five Years of Service  7/20/2009

In June 2004, Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital in Bowling Green opened as a 28-bed long term acute care hospital and began accepting patients. Today, Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital plays a vital role in meeting the needs of patients who require specialized, continuing medical care in an acute care setting.

“For five years, Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital has served as an alternative for care for patients who require a longer stay than typical acute care hospital patients due to their chronic or complex medical conditions,” said Shirley Kendall, Administrator of Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital. “Many of our patients transfer from intensive care units at acute care hospitals. Here they receive specialized care focused on helping them recover and return home or to an appropriate level of care at another facility such as a skilled transitional unit or nursing home.”

Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital is designed to improve the continuity of care for patients with medically complex conditions and multiple chronic conditions which require long term stays in an acute care environment for extended diagnostic and medical treatment or rehabilitation. Patients average 25 days or more for their length of stay. The hospital serves patients with the following conditions: respiratory failure (requiring ventilation weaning); complex pulmonary disorders; sepsis/infectious diseases requiring long-term IV antibiotics; chronic cardiac disorders; non-healing wounds and skin ulcers; post-operative complications; multi-system organ failure; and, renal and vascular disease.

“Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital allows families the convenience and comfort of staying close to home rather than traveling to a large metropolitan area for their loved one’s care,” said Kendall. The only one of its kind in Southcentral Kentucky, Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital serves as an alternative to long term acute care hospitals in Louisville and Nashville.

Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital is not a nursing home or skilled nursing transitional unit. It is designed to meet the special needs of patients requiring a long term inpatient hospital stay. An interdisciplinary team comprised of acute care nurses with a critical care background, rehabilitation specialists, respiratory therapists, wound care nurses, case managers, and social workers provide collaborative care for patients.

Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital is a federally-designated long term acute care “hospital within a hospital.” It is located within The Medical Center on the sixth floor. It is owned and operated by Commonwealth Health Corporation, the parent company of The Medical Center. Although located within The Medical Center, Commonwealth Regional Specialty Hospital is a separate hospital with its own board of directors and medical and professional staff.
